The word hikizuri (引捯) literally means “trailing” or “dragging” — referring to the distinctive extra-long hem of this special kimono style, which is left to trail gracefully along the floor as the wearer moves.
The hikizuri kimono is worn exclusively by geisha (geiko), apprentice geisha (maiko), and performers in traditional Japanese arts including nihon buyo (classical Japanese dance) and kabuki theatre. Unlike everyday kimono, the hikizuri is worn without the ohashori (the fold at the waist used to adjust the length of a regular kimono) — instead, the extra length is allowed to trail behind the wearer, creating the most dramatic and visually magnificent silhouette in all of Japanese dress.
