What is a kimono? The kimono is Japan’s most celebrated traditional garment — a graceful, T-shaped robe with straight seams, worn wrapped left over right and secured with a decorative sash known as an obi. The word itself is beautifully simple: ki (to wear) + mono (thing) — “a thing to wear.” Yet within that simplicity lies one of the most complex, beautiful, and culturally rich garments ever created.

The kimono has been worn in Japan for over a thousand years. It began as everyday clothing for all classes of society, evolved into an elaborate art form during the Heian and Edo periods, and today stands as a living symbol of Japanese cultural identity — worn at weddings, coming-of-age ceremonies, tea ceremonies, summer festivals, and by fashion lovers around the world.

What makes a kimono unique?

  • Silhouette: T-shaped with straight seams — one of the most universally flattering cuts ever designed
  • Construction: Cut from a single bolt of fabric (tanmono) with minimal waste — a masterpiece of sustainable design
  • Pattern & colour: Every motif carries meaning — seasonal flowers, auspicious animals, geometric patterns with cultural significance
  • Occasion: Different kimono types for different occasions — from the formal furisode to the casual yukata
  • Accessories: Worn with obi sash, tabi socks, geta sandals, and kanzashi hair ornaments for a complete aesthetic system
