A Curated Guide — Cheongsam Qipao

Qipao
·
Where to Find One.

Not every qipao deserves to be worn.

This is a list of the few sources that have earned the right to be here. Each one has been considered. None of them are here by accident.

01

East Meets Dress

Custom qipao built for the contemporary wardrobe.

The name is accurate. This is a label that understands what it means to wear a cheongsam qipao in a modern context — not as costume, not as nostalgia, but as a considered choice. The construction is reliable. The customization options are genuine.

Selection notes — Short styles carry better into daily life. Long styles earn their place at occasions. Matte satin reads more refined than high-sheen alternatives. When in doubt, go shorter and simpler.

02

The Qipology

Clean lines. Elevated enough for daily wear.

The Qipology occupies a specific and useful position: it is not trying to be a museum piece, and it is not trying to be fast fashion. The silhouette is clean. The construction is honest. It is the kind of label you can wear to a dinner and not feel like you are making a statement — which is, in many ways, the highest compliment.

Selection notes — Solid colors and low-saturation prints outlast high-saturation ones by several seasons. Side zippers are cleaner than back zippers — both in appearance and in daily use. Choose the version you will still want in three years.

03

Etsy — Independent Makers

Niche. Trustworthy. Communicative.

The right Etsy maker is worth more than most retail labels. The wrong one is a lesson in patience. The difference is almost always visible before you order: look for shops that show real buyer photographs, respond to messages within a day, and can tell you exactly what the lining is made of. These are not small things. They are the whole thing.

Selection notes — Prioritize shops with authentic buyer photographs over styled product shots. Before ordering, confirm the lining material in writing. A maker who answers this question clearly is a maker who has thought about it.

04

Shanghai Tang

A classic that still earns its place.

Shanghai Tang requires no introduction. It has been making the case for Chinese luxury since 1994, and it continues to do so with a consistency that most labels cannot sustain. The brand has had its seasons of excess and its seasons of restraint. The restrained seasons are the ones worth paying attention to.

Selection notes — Focus on the restrained colorways and the refined silhouettes. Classic styles outlast seasonal ones by years. If you are buying one piece to last a decade, buy the one that looks like it was designed to.

Custom & Fitting

If you want a qipao that fits the way a qipao is supposed to fit — or if you want something that belongs to no one else — this is the direction.

Where to begin —

Local tailors

Ask specifically whether they have made qipao before — not whether they make dresses. The construction of a cheongsam qipao is specific. A tailor who has done it knows this. One who has not will not know what you are asking.

Measurements

Arrive with your own: bust, waist, hips, dress length, collar height, and slit height. A tailor who does not ask for all of these is not making a qipao — they are making a dress with a mandarin collar.

Fabric

Sourcing your own fabric gives you more control than selecting from a tailor's stock. Recommended: matte silk, double crepe, wool blend. These drape correctly, hold their shape, and age well. Avoid anything that photographs beautifully and feels like nothing.

The Qipao Does Not Announce Itself.

You wear it. It wears you back.

A good cheongsam qipao does not need to be replaced frequently. It does not need to be explained. It does not need an occasion to justify itself. It only needs to be worn correctly — once, and then again, and then again after that.

The pieces that last are never the ones that demanded the most attention when you bought them. They are the ones that asked for nothing and gave everything.

Tell me in the comments: the qipao you have worn the most — where did it come from, and what made it the one you kept reaching for? I read every one. 💬
