The traditional Japanese kimono is constructed from a single bolt of fabric (tanmono) approximately 36cm wide and 12 metres long, cut into straight rectangular pieces and sewn together with minimal waste. This elegant, geometric construction is one of the most sustainable and ingenious garment-making systems ever devised — and it is the foundation of every kimono in our collection. Understanding how a kimono is made deepens your appreciation of the finished garment enormously.

Basic Kimono Construction:

Body panels: Two front panels (maemigoro) and two back panels (ushiromigoro)
Sleeves: Two sleeves (sode) attached at the shoulder
Collar: A long collar strip (eri) sewn along the front opening
Undercollar: A removable undercollar (han-eri) for easy cleaning
